Registration Day for 2013 Kitesurf World Cup Mendoza, Argentina
Mendoza, Argentina welcomes the final stop of the 2013 PKRA World Tour playing host to the top men and female competitors in both freestyle and slalom disciplines. This is the first time Mendoza will host a World Cup PKRA event, and riders and staff alike have been looking forward to the beautiful scenery, world-class kiteboarding conditions, famous gastro-fare, and Argentinian hospitality.
Many competitors were offered their first taste of the conditions at the event site today at Lago Potrerillos, riding 12 to 14M kites. The dry thermal winds and flat-water conditions should provide ample opportunity for both freestyle and slalom riders to showcase a high level of competition in their respective disciplines.
With Mendoza being the only stop in the southern hemisphere of the 2013 season, today’s registration drew the regular tour veterans alongside many competitors from South America and beyond. In total, 67 riders represent 16 countries, making the pool of talent deep with a strong contingency of Argentinian, and Brazilian riders present. Overall, 39 men and 12 women have registered for freestyle, and 37 men and 9 women for Slalom.
With both the 2013 men’s and women’s freestyle world titles already secured in China by Alex Pastor and Gisela Pulido, this final event of 2013 presents the last opportunity for riders to improve their overall tour ranking, as well as secure the coveted pre-seeded spots for the 2014 tour season. For the slalom, current point leader Brian Lake needs only one win to secure his title as 2013 Slalom World Champion, while for the women - Christine Bonniger has secured the World Champion title and is absent at this event, leaving a field of women hungry for the second spot. With an event purse of $47,000 USD and an overall year-end tour purse of $40, 000 USD there is a lot more than bragging rights on the line.
Conditions through the event period look good and tomorrow will begin with the opening ceremony at 11:00 with a first possible start to the men’s trials or slalom races at 1:00 pm.
